O "mos maiorum" e a fortuna do Império Romano no século IV d.C.

The purpose of this paper is to present some reflections on the relationship between political and religious practices in the Roman Empire of the 4th century A.D. To do so, we chose a corpus which gathers texts produced by authors linked to the polytheistic traditions. The analysis, structured upon �isotopic reading�, enables to verify that the discourses, influenced by a set of ideas coming from the Republican period, represent the traditional roman senatorial aristocracy as the guardian of the ancient customs � the one responsible for the greatness of the Empire � and the military, the court and the plebeians, as corrupt � those responsible for decay. Finally, the images apprehended from the analyzed discourses associate the fortuna of Rome to the observance of the mos maiorum.A proposta deste artigo é apresentar algumas considerações acerca da relação entre práticas políticas e religiosas no Império Romano do século IV d.C. Para tanto, elegemos um corpus que reúne textos produzidos por autores vinculados às tradições politeístas. A análise, estruturada a partir da �leitura isotópica�, permite verificar que os discursos, influenciados por um conjunto de ideias oriundas do período republicano, representam a aristocracia senatorial romana tradicional como a guardiã dos costumes ancestrais � a responsável pela grandeza do Império � e os militares, a corte e a plebe, como corruptos � os responsáveis pela decadência. Enfim, as imagens apreendidas dos discursos analisados associam a fortuna de Roma à observância do mos maiorum
